James E. Valahovic, age 82, of Erie, passed away on Monday, February 8, 2021 at UPMC Hamot. He was born in Erie on December 31, 1938 to the late Thomas and Adeline “Della” (Kuligowski) Valahovic.
After graduating from Tech High School in 1957, Jim joined the US Army and was stationed at Pope Air Force Base at Fort Bragg, NC where he was a security guard. After being discharged from the Army, he returned to Erie and worked at GE, where he retired from in 1995. He served as Co-Chairman of the Erie Sewer Authority for 10 years, made the EPA City of Erie upgrade of the waste water treatment plant at $100,000,000.00 and was nicknamed “The $100,000,000.00 A Year Man.” He served on the Erie School Board Authority for four years, and served as treasurer during his final year. Jim was a member of the Polish Falcons #610 for 60 years, was a club officer for 20 years, district officer of the Polish Falcons of America for four years, received the Gold Legion Award, which is the highest Falcon Honor, and was a life member of Moniuszko Singing Society. He was also a member of the Slovak, Siebenbuerger, and Huzars Clubs, 25 year member of the Maennerchor Club, GE Quarter Century Club, Wesleyville American Legion Post 571, and (R.A.G.E.). He loved polka dancing, polka music, and polka trips. He was an avid Notre Dame fan and loved Notre Dame football and basketball. He had a metro league season ticket for the same seat at Gannon for 50 years for all Erie high school basketball games.
Jim is survived by his brother Richard Valahovic (Diane) of Erie, nieces and nephews Darlene Babcock (John) of San Francisco, CA, Joseph Valahovic (Melinda) of Sagamore Hills, OH, Stephen Valahovic (Laurena) of Englewood, NJ, and Mark Valahovic (Lainie) of Destin, FL, great nieces and nephews Christopher and Sam Babcock, Dominic, Jordan, and Olivia Valahovic, Benjamin Valahovic, and Kaia and Ian Wingler.
The family would like to extend deepest thanks to Suzanne Osborn for all the outstanding help she provided to Jim for the last several years.
Following all current Covid-19 guidelines, visitation will be held on Friday, February 12, 2021 from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Edward J. Garr Funeral Home, 459 E. 12th St. Erie, PA 16503. Funeral service will be on Saturday, February 13, 2021 at St. Stanislaus Church, 516 E. 13th St. Erie, PA 16503 at 11:00 am. Entombment will follow at Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum with full military honors.
