Sophie (Lewandowski) Tatara, age 92, of Erie, passed away on Friday, February 12, 2021 at St. Mary’s Home East. She was born in Erie on September 25, 1928 to the late Thaddeus and Frances (Karlinski) Lewandowski.
Sophie worked as a cook at East Erie Turners. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Church and its Women’s Association, and an Associate of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth. She enjoyed cooking and baking.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Tatara, brothers Stanley Lewandowski and his wife Trudy and Joseph Lewandowski and wife Eleanor, daughter Bernadette Tatara, great-grandson Niall Rush, and great-granddaughter Shelah Grace McMinn.
Sophie is survived by four sons, Stanley Tatara (Sheila) of Akron, NY, John Tatara (Sandy Balkovic) of Erie, Steven Tatara (Denise) of Erie, and Greg Tatara (Michelle) of Michigan, two daughters Christine Sweeney (Bill) of Erie and Diane Teuscher (Steve) of Wisconsin, 19 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Pauline Tatara, and many nieces and nephews.
Following all current Covid-19 guidelines, visitation will be on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Edward J. Garr Funeral Home, 459 E. 12th St. Erie, PA 16503. The funeral service will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at St. Stanislaus Church, 516 E. 13th St. Erie, PA 16503. Family and friends may also attend the service virtually via Facebook Live at https://www.facebook.com/Edward-J-Garr-Funeral-Home-Inc-100130284712299 Entombment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Stanislaus Church or to St. Mary’s East Benevolence Fund, 607 E. 26th St. Erie, PA 16504.
